The story of Opa Laurens, A Road Sweeper in Tomohon
“I am assisted by a wife. If you are not assisted by your wife, you can finish it until the sun rises”
Opa Laurens. A Road Sweeper
TOMOHON, publikreport.com – While the townspeople at the foot of Mount Lokon and Mahawu are still sleeping soundly with each other’s beautiful and bad dreams, Opa Laurens Montolalu (74), has been awake while preparing himself with broom sticks, skep, plastic bags, raincoats, shoes, and hats and flashlights in the middle of the night.
The cold winds that hit seemed to be felt by Opa Laurens who walked to the area to be cleaned, starting from the intersection around Sineleyan to the city park of Tomohon. At midnight, at around 1:00 a.m., Opa Laurens, assisted by his wife, began to move the broom stick and skep to collect various types of garbage on the street and put it in a plastic bag. There was no disgust or embarrassment when they raised various types of garbage.
“This is like sports for me,” Opa Laurens told publikreport.com who interviewed him on Saturday 20 January 2018 in the morning.
The street sweeper is usually used by Opa Laurens who lives in the Neighborhood III Village of Talete I, Tomohon Subdistrict, Tomohon City, North Sulawesi Province (North Sulawesi). He felt no cold wind. In fact, sweat flowed, even though it was interspersed with panting breaths and sad eyes from the old man.
However, a friendly and charming smile still reflected on his old face.
“I have been a road sweeper for nine years. This is to support the family, “he said.
Next to Opa Laurens, there was an old woman who was still nimbly sweeping and lifting trash on the street.
“I am assisted by a wife. If you are not assisted by your wife, you can finish it until the sun rises, “explained Opa Laurens.
As a road cleaner, Opa Laurens admitted that she was often disappointed with the behavior of residents who were not aware of the importance of maintaining cleanliness and the environment. There are still people who carelessly dispose of household garbage.
“There are already officers who will transport garbage. However, there are still those who throw garbage at random, “he said disappointed. “I hope the community increases awareness of the importance of environmental hygiene,” he added.
To the Department of Environment of Tomohon City, Opa Laurens hopes that there will be concern regarding work equipment that they use everyday.
“During my work, I have only been given equipment twice,” he said.
